Michael Tell was a concert promoter and the longtime publisher of the Las Vegas Israelite, a newspaper serving Southern Nevada’s Jewish community. He was briefly married to actress Patty Duke in 1970 and was the biological father of Sean Astin, according to the actor’s public account of DNA testing.

Tell died on 6 April 2025, aged 80. His newspaper’s family memorial records his dates as 1 March 1945 to 6 April 2025. His story encompasses a short, much-discussed marriage, a family connection established years later and a working life that moved from live music to local journalism.

The brief marriage to Patty Duke

Tell and Duke married in June 1970. PEOPLE describes them as together for just 13 days; the marriage was later annulled. Duke subsequently married actor John Astin, who adopted Sean and helped raise him. This is why Sean’s surname and his biological relationship to Tell tell different parts of the same family story.

As PEOPLE’s family timeline records, Sean was born on 25 February 1971. Duke and John married in 1972. These events happened before the later investigation of Sean’s biological parentage, which helps explain why older accounts of the family can give different answers.

How Sean Astin described his parentage

The central point comes from Sean’s own distinction between the father who raised him and his biological father. Speaking to PEOPLE in 2001, he said: “John Astin is my father, Michael Tell is my biological father.”

A contemporaneous reproduction of PEOPLE’s 2002 profile reported that an encounter with Tell’s niece prompted DNA testing, which identified Tell as Sean’s biological father. That account also recorded Duke’s disagreement with the result. Describing what Sean said the testing established is more precise than suggesting that a reporter independently examined his genetic records.

The discovery did not make Sean discard his existing family relationships. At RootsTech in 2023, he discussed maintaining connections with John Astin and his stepfather Mike Pearce, while also building relationships with Tell and Desi Arnaz Jr., whom he had previously understood to be his biological father.

“My big accomplishment [was] I didn’t judge anyone,” he said, according to the event organiser, FamilySearch. His account makes room for several important relationships without confusing their roles. John was his adoptive father; Tell was his biological father; Arnaz remained someone with whom he had developed a meaningful bond. Mike Pearce and Michael Tell were two different people.

From teenage concerts to a family newspaper

In a 2018 UNLV oral-history interview, Tell recalled moving west with his father, Jack, as a teenager and opening Las Vegas’s Twin Lakes Twist teenage nightclub in 1961. He remembered booking Bobby Darin and Wayne Newton.

He subsequently operated Mike Tell Productions in Los Angeles. In 1979, after his father’s death, he returned to Las Vegas to help his mother, Beatrice, with the Israelite. His recollection describes starting with circulation before taking on publishing and editorial responsibilities.

Tell also explained a change in the paper’s emphasis: as the local Jewish community grew, he focused more closely on its news.

A publishing history readers can trace

The Israelite’s history can be followed beyond later celebrity profiles. UNLV’s newspaper archive identifies its first issue as Volume 1, Number 1, dated 29 January 1965, and provides access to early editions. That is useful contemporary evidence when retrospective accounts differ over the publication’s starting year.

The distinction also matters when describing Tell’s job. Concert promotion involves arranging and presenting live performances. Newspaper publishing involves sustaining a publication and its editorial operation. Neither role should be casually converted into claims that he was a recording artist, an actor or a Hollywood producer.

His death and the newspaper’s next chapter

The Las Vegas Israelite memorial was signed by Tell’s nieces, Bonnie Tell Lally and Michele Tell. It announced a temporary pause following his death and stated their intention to continue the newspaper in print and online, with new contributors and features. That was a statement of their plans at the time, rather than a guarantee about any later publishing schedule.

It also provides a clear answer to searches asking whether Michael Tell is still alive: he died in April 2025. The notice does not give a cause of death, so it provides no basis for attributing his death to a particular illness.

Final Thoughts

Tell’s public record connects two different histories: Sean Astin’s account of finding his biological father and the Tell family’s involvement in a Las Vegas community newspaper. Keeping both in view gives a fuller understanding of the man than the duration of his marriage alone.
